Practice Overview

A former solicitor of over 30 years’ standing, Mark Brookes joined Broadway House Chambers’ highly-rated Criminal Law team in March 2014. He specialises in this area, and his addition continues our sustained expansion over recent years.

Mark Brookes has a prosecution and defence practice who is known for his relaxed and approachable style with clients. In 2003 he qualified as a Higher Courts Advocate and provided advice and representation to clients across the full range of criminal cases. He has a track record of appearing in jury trials, contested confiscation hearings, and appeals to the Court of Appeal (Criminal Division) against sentence.

Mark began his career with the CPS upon its establishment in 1986. He went on to lead teams of lawyers and caseworkers throughout West Yorkshire and had overall casework responsibility in several high profile cases, including the 1996 prosecution of the youngest-ever youth for a homicide offence. In his time at the CPS Mark trained lawyers nationally and was the National Lead Tutor for the prosecution of drugs matters.

In 1998 he was a founder member of a specialist criminal defence firm of solicitors. Within this firm he rapidly went on to achieve and maintain an excellent reputation for the quality of his advice and advocacy. During this period Mark qualified as a court duty and police station duty solicitor. His defence practice has included defending clients in prosecutions brought by HMRC and BIS, and successfully preventing disqualification in road traffic matters.

Mark Brookes has appeared in inquests on behalf of families and other interested parties. He also acts in prison law matters, appearing before adjudication and discretionary life panels, arguing for the release of prisoners serving life sentences.
