Role: Junior Civil and Family Clerk

Staff Responsible to: Senior Civil and Family Clerk

Due to the increase of Civil and Family work, we are looking for a Junior Clerk to join our friendly Clerking team! Our offices are situated in the heart of Bradford and Leeds City Centre. Our working hours are Monday to Friday 9.00am-5.30pm.

Overall Purpose of Job: To assist the Senior Clerk in the smooth and efficient running of the Civil Clerking Team and to promote and enhance, whenever possible, the individual barristers practices and Chambers as a whole.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist solicitors in arranging Counsel of their choice and, where this is not possible, arrange alternative Counsel.
  • Book conferences.
  • Book in instructions and briefs and ensure that appropriate Counsel is, or has been, allocated.
  • Dealing with the listing of cases and advising each member of Chambers of their commitments the following day
  • Negotiate fees with solicitors, where necessary under the direction of the Senior Clerk, and assisting in the recovery of fees.
  • Be aware of long term case problems, liase with Counsel and transfer briefs where necessary, after first consulting with instructing solicitors.
  • Keep computer diaries updated.
  • Ensure that fees are appealed when appropriate to do so.
  • Bill cases as soon as possible after the conclusion of the case or earlier if reasons dictate, and process cheques when necessary
  • Assist in the collection of fees as and when necessary
  • Assist the Senior Clerk and Marketing Manager from time to time in the marketing and promotion of Chambers

Key areas for results:

Knowledge of Counsels’ practices and range of work; knowledge of current rates for Counsel, communication skills, ability in administration; computer skills

Standards of Performance:

  • Client satisfaction with choice of Counsel.
  • Smooth transfer of Counsel when listing problems occur.
  • Fees agreed at the level appropriate to the amount and complexity of the work involved.
  • Prompt turn round of administrative paperwork and computer data.

Experience:

  • Previous experience in the legal sector is desirable but not required.
  • Salary dependent on experience.

Role: Office Assistant

We are looking for an Office Assistant to join our friendly Team!

Description:

  • Based at our Leeds office and sometimes required at our Bradford office.
  • Required to work Monday-Friday 9.00-5.30pm

Job Responsibilities:

  • Collection and delivery of DX mail from and to the central collection point
  • Collection and delivery of mail and/or urgent documents to the Court, the Crown Prosecution Service and local Solicitors
  • Open, sort and enter the daily post/emails on the computer system and deliver to the clerks
  • Allocating briefs to put with the additional information received
  • Telephone solicitors for outstanding briefs and other papers
  • Locate briefs for the following day from Counsel’s rooms
  • Log and distribute secure emails
  • Log out post
  • General photocopying, filing and telephone answering
  • Meet and Greet conferences
  • Assisting both Senior and Assistant Clerks, Marketing Manager and Chambers Director
