75th Anniversary of Women Taking Silk & The Opening of the Legal Year

This Week, Michelle Colborne KC attended two celebrations in London.

The first was a celebration at the Royal Courts of Justice to mark 75 years since women took Silk.

In 1949 barristers Helena Normanton and Rose Heilbron were the first women in England and Wales to take Silk and become KCs under King George VI.

Michelle said, “There were 350 women present at the Royal Court’s of Justice and it and it was truly remarkable to be part of it all. I took Silk in 2010 and at the time, was the only female Criminal Silk on Circuit. I am delighted that we now have more incredible women who have also taken Silk”.

Michelle said: “On Tuesday I was also invited to the opening of the legal year at Westminster Cathedral. Afterwards there was a reception at The Great Hall, the same place where I was sworn in as Silk 14 years ago. Past member of Chambers, HHJ Sophie McKone was present as were other Judges from Bradford and Leeds. A very proud couple of days away from circuit”
